A Local Guide to the Filming Locations

Recently many travelers have asked me about the Netflix drama When Life Gives You Tangerines. The story is touching, but what really captures peopleโ€™s attention is the scenery. Almost every episode shows the natural beauty of Jeju Islandโ€”the ocean, volcanic hills, fishing villages, and quiet countryside roads.

If you are planning a trip to Jeju, visiting some of these filming locations can make your trip much more special. As a guide, I often recommend travelers to explore Jeju not only as tourists, but also as if they are walking inside the story of the drama.

Here are some places you should not miss.ย

1. Sunrise and Canola Flowers at Seongsan Ilchulbong

One of the most iconic locations appearing in the drama is Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak.

This UNESCO-listed volcanic crater rises dramatically from the sea and is one of the most famous landmarks in Jeju. In the drama, scenes from the childhood of the main characters were filmed around this area.

If you visit during spring, you will also see beautiful canola flower fields around the area. The yellow flowers with the ocean and volcanic peak in the background create one of the most photogenic landscapes in Jeju.

Nearby places worth visiting:

  • Seopjikoji โ€“ famous for its dramatic coastal cliffs

  • Gwangchigi Beach โ€“ perfect for sunrise photos

2. The Fishing Village of Gimnyeong

Another memorable location in the drama is the peaceful coastal village of Gimnyeong.

This area shows the authentic life of Jejuโ€™s famous Haenyeo, the traditional women divers who harvest seafood without oxygen tanks.

The emerald-colored sea here is incredibly beautiful, and the coastal walking path is perfect for slow travel. If you visit during low tide, the scenery becomes even more unique.

You can also try a Haenyeo cultural experience here and learn about their incredible lifestyle.

3. Jejuโ€™s Oreum Hills and Coastal Trails

One unique landscape in Jeju is the Oreum, which are small volcanic hills formed by ancient eruptions.

In the drama, the characters walk through open fields and climb these gentle hills, which show the quiet natural side of the island.

Good places to experience this landscape include:

  • Baekyaki Oreum

  • Andol Oreum

Most oreum hikes take only 15โ€“20 minutes, but the view from the top is surprisingly beautiful. Depending on the season you may see canola flowers, hydrangeas, or silver grass.

4. Traditional Jeju Villages

If you want to understand traditional Jeju culture, visiting a folk village is a good idea.

In the drama, many nostalgic village scenes reflect the old lifestyle of the island. You can experience a similar atmosphere in places like:

  • Seongeup Folk Village

  • Jeju Stone Park

Here you will see stone walls, thatched-roof houses, and narrow alleys that show the traditional architecture of Jeju.

5. Walking Through History at Jejumok Gwana

Another interesting filming location is Jejumok Gwana, a well-preserved government office from the Joseon Dynasty.

In the drama, this is where an important writing contest takes place.

Today visitors can walk through the historic buildings and learn about the history of Jeju. Some travelers also rent hanbok and take photos here to experience the traditional atmosphere.

Nearby, you can also visit Dongmun Traditional Market, one of the best places to try local street food.

6. Coastal Cliffs and Sunset Views

Jejuโ€™s coastline appears throughout the drama, especially dramatic volcanic cliffs and quiet ocean roads.

One beautiful place is Saengigijeong Cliff, part of the famous Jeju Olle Trail network.

Walking here you will hear the sound of waves crashing against the volcanic cliffs and feel the fresh ocean breeze. The views toward nearby islands are stunning, especially around sunset.

7. Fishing Villages and Local Markets

To truly understand Jeju culture, you should also visit a local port. One good example is Hallim Port, located on the west coast of the island. Nearby you can explore Hallim Fisheries Market, where fresh seafood is sold directly by local fishermen. From here you can also see Biyangdo, a small volcanic island that creates a beautiful coastal view.

๐Ÿ”ˆ Hallim Fisheries Market: 141-11 Hallimhaean-ro, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si

What makes When Life Gives You Tangerines special is not only the story, but the way it shows everyday life on Jeju Island.

Fishing villages, volcanic hills, quiet coastal roads, and traditional culture all appear naturally throughout the drama.

If you visit these locations during your trip, you may feel something interesting: It can feel as if you are stepping inside the scenes of the story. ย And that is one of the best ways to experience Jeju.
